On September 30th, 2021 Canadians across our nation are recognizing Orange Shirt Day – a grassroots movement inspired by the story of residential school Survivor, Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation and is now officially known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This important annual initiative aims to spread awareness of the individual, family and community intergenerational impacts of the Indian Residential School system and reinforce the #EveryChildMatters movement. Algoma University has cancelled all classes on this day to provide an opportunity for all members of our community to engage in learning, reflection and action.
Given the history of the Shingwauk site that serves as home to our Sault Ste. Mare campus, the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC), Anishinaabe Academic Resource Centre and the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association are partnering to host a very special Orange Shirt Day event on September 30th. This year’s event will include virtual elements allowing members of the Algoma University community studying and working in Brampton and Timmins, or anywhere in the world, an opportunity to participate. Please keep an eye out for further details and calendar invites as they are released over the days leading up to September 30th.
