New 16-Month Master of Computer Science Specialization at Algoma University Bridges Talent Gap with Hands-On, Ethical Tech Training in AI and Data Science

Applications Open May 4, 2026

Algoma University’s Faculty of Computer Science and Technology (FCST) is launching a new 16-month Master of Computer Science (MCS), designed to meet the speed, complexity, and demands of today’s global technology sector.

Offered in Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton, the course-based MCS program delivers an accelerated, industry-aligned experience with a specialization in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designed for graduates in computer science, information technology, and related fields, the program equips students with the technical and analytical skills needed to succeed in some of the fastest-growing areas of the digital economy.

“As industries worldwide accelerate their adoption of emerging technologies, the need for highly skilled, adaptable graduates has never been greater,” said Dr. Simon Xu, Acting Dean of the FCST. “This new specialization positions Algoma University at the forefront of innovation, preparing students not just to participate in the tech world, but to lead it.”

Students gain a rigorous foundation in advanced computer science while developing specialized expertise in some of the field’s most critical areas, including Machine Learning, Neural Networks and Deep Learning, and Natural Language Processing. Culminating in a two-term capstone experience, Computing Project I and II, students apply their knowledge to solve a substantial real-world problem and create a strong portfolio piece for future employers.

“A distinguishing feature of the program is its dedicated focus on Ethical and Human Centred AI,” added Dr. Xu. “This reflects Algoma University’s commitment to preparing graduates who are not only technically skilled but also equipped to lead responsibly in the evolving field of technology.”

As an important addition to the University’s growing suite of graduate programming, the new MCS specialization is designed to align with labour market demand while supporting Algoma University’s long-term sustainability and responsible student population growth.

Applications for the January 2027 intake open on May 4, 2026. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early.
