TEDxAlgomaU: Free Your Genius, celebrating unconventional roads to success
Algoma University is thrilled to announce that TEDx is coming to Sault Ste. Marie! Recently appointed Tier II Canada Research Chair in Tissue Biophysics Dr. Nirosha Murugan and a group of dedicated student scientists have collaborated to present “TEDxAlgomaU- Free Your Genius”.
TED is a global nonprofit community, devoted to spreading ideas and welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. They believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. TED.com is building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.
This student-led team of enthusiastic volunteers have collaborated to create an evening that will bring guests on an intellectual journey drawing from the raw experiences of the speakers whose roots stem in Northern Ontario. The theme “Free Your Genius” will highlight each speaker’s unique and unconventional roads to success and provide thought-provoking talks in the spirit of ideas worth spreading.
“The Algoma region has always been the home of originality, innovation and ideas worth spreading,” shared Dr. Nirosha Murugan. “By infusing the internationally renowned TEDx Platform with our own local stars, we will be able to showcase not only our inspirational speakers on the international stage but also what we as a community in the North are capable of. The student and AU Community have come together to create this event that will showcase empowering talks, novel experiences and profound networking opportunities so that even when our guests leave the event, they will go home with a mind full of “ideas worth spreading!”

“It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside Dr. Murugan and our very dedicated team to bring this event to fruition,” shared TEDxAlgomaU student lead and BSc Biology graduate Sawith Abeygunawardena. ”Planning a great event is no easy task, especially when it’s a TEDx event, but our team consists of students with diverse skill sets who are determined to make this event great and represent Algoma U with pride. It’s like we are one well-oiled machine! We are excited to showcase the talent and opportunities we have, right here in Sault Ste Marie, on a global platform like TEDx.”
