National Indigenous History Month (NIHM) and Indigenous Peoples Day are commemorated each June to recognize, celebrate and honour the history, culture and diversity of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada – past and present. It’s a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous people across Turtle Island, celebrating unique heritage and diverse cultures.
Algoma University and the Anishinaabe Academic Resource Centre (AARC) extend a warm invitation to all to celebrate through participation in several activities planned for June’s National Indigenous History Month and Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.
Highlights of Algoma University’s National Indigenous History Month include:
SAULT STE. MARIE
Flag Raising
On June 1st, In Sault Ste. Marie, please join Joel Syrette, Director, Makwa Waakaa’igan and the new Shingwauk Anishinaabe Student’s Association (SASA) executive for a flag-raising ceremony at Algoma University’s Sault Ste. Marie campus front loop in front of Shingwauk Hall at 9:00 AM.
Gabegendaadowin Launch
On June 7th, the Gabegendaadowin Training Program will be officially launched in Sault Ste. Marie. Upcoming launches in Timmins and Brampton will take place later this summer.
AARC Open House
On June 14 we will host our First Annual Anishinaabe Academic Resource Centre Open House at the Speakeasy which will be open to Algoma University and local Indigenous communities.
BRAMPTON
National Indigenous People’s Day Celebrations
On June 22nd, the Anishinaabe Academic Resource Centre will participate in the City of Brampton’s National Indigenous People’s Day Celebrations.
TIMMINS
Outreach Event
On June 1st from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM the AARC and AU Timmins are partnering with the Mattagami First Nation to welcome Indigenous community members and high school students from District School Board Ontario Northeast and the Northeastern Catholic District School Board to our AU Timmins campus for an outreach event. This event will highlight Algoma Universty’s programs and activities led by the AARC. Information on the upcoming AU/Mattagami First Nation land camp will also be provided to the students.
National Indigenous People’s Day Celebrations
On June 21st from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM please visit AU Timmins at their booth as they celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day Celebrations with the Timmins Indigenous Organizations Committee at Hollinger Park – Timmins.
VIRTUAL
Anishinaababemowin Language Class
Every Monday in the month of June, you are invited to virtually participate in Weekly Anishinaabemowin Language Classes with Professor JP (John Paul) Chalykoff. Join here.
AARC Speaker Series
On June 13th and as part of the AARC’s Anishinaabe Scholar Speaker Series we are pleased to virtually welcome Dr. Anton Treuer to present on “Gender Identities and Gender Roles in Ojibwe Culture: Then and Now.” Join here.
“We encourage and welcome everyone in the Algoma University community to participate in all of the activities we have planned for National Indigenous History Month,” shared Paul Sayers, Manager, Indigenous Community Relations, Training and Development. “ We are excited to share our culture and to celebrate with us, whether in-person or virtually.”
