Introduction of Graduate Degrees planned for 2022-23 

(BRAMPTON/SAULT STE. MARIE/TIMMINS, ON: November 25, 2021): Plans for continued development at Algoma University, including the introduction of graduate degrees, were made more evident this evening thanks to the unanimous adoption of the institution’s new five-year Academic Plan by the Board of Governors. In addition to building on the positive momentum Algoma is experiencing, the Academic Plan provides a framework to support long-term enrolment goals and the institution’s economic and social impact.

The Algoma University Academic Plan, 2021-2026 provides a roadmap for the strategic introduction of new programming initiatives, including master’s degrees, academic offerings tied to health sciences, and specialized programming in mental health and addictions. “Change is normal for any post-secondary institution, but in the case of Algoma University, the change has not only been rapid and substantial—it has been transformational,” noted Dr. Donna Rogers, Vice-President Academic and Research. “The new academic plan takes a holistic approach to programming incorporating the impacts of COVID-19, enrolment growth targets, campus planning, quality assurance, experiential learning and other priorities in establishing the key directions that are the focus of the plan.” 

With growing campuses in Brampton, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins, the academic plan furthers the tri-campus integration of academics, experiential learning, academic supports for students and increased opportunities for eLearning, as well as increased support for international study and work abroad – all while continuing to embed the ongoing commitments the institution has made to its Special Mission and equity, diversity and inclusion. “By adopting the academic plan, we make an institutional commitment to ensure our programs and curriculum speak to a growing and diverse population of students,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Asima Vezina. “This commitment aligns with our equity, diversity and inclusion work that is critical to the many contributions our students and graduates make within society today and into the future.”

As part of the November 2021 President’s Report to the Board, Vezina provided an update on key strategic priorities, highlighting that 2021-2022 enrolment is on track to exceed 3,000 full-time equivalent students, putting Algoma three years ahead of schedule in achieving this milestone. Growth has occurred at all three campus locations. A domestic enrolment increase of 42% in Brampton has helped boost overall enrolment at the growing campus to over 1,300 students this Fall.

“These continue to be exciting times for Algoma University. Even while facing the ongoing challenges brought on by the global pandemic, the university continues to move forward in a positive, strategic way through the development of world-class facilities and innovative new academic programming,” shared Board Chair, Shelley Schell. “The updates provided this evening reinforce our current success, which is anticipated to continue into the immediate future.”  

The next meeting of the Algoma University Board of Governors is scheduled for January 27, 2022.
