Algoma University is honoured to sponsor the City of Brampton’s Heartbeats in Arts & Culture Program–the first of its kind in Canada—designed to celebrate and empower Black and Indigenous high school students through mentorship from Indigenous and Black artists and professionals, offering valuable experience and insight into the arts sector.
The Heartbeats Program is both an innovative performing arts high school co-op placement and a paid internship for post-secondary students. This initiative helps high school students learn about professional development and how to prepare for leadership roles and careers in the arts and culture sectors.
“Algoma University is dedicated to creating inclusive pathways that develop and retain artistic talent in the communities we serve,” said Dr. Donna Rogers, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University. “By supporting the Heartbeats Program, we are empowering Black and Indigenous high school students to explore their creative potential, gain mentorship from established cultural leaders, and envision successful careers in the arts. This partnership reinforces Algoma University’s ongoing commitment to cross-cultural learning, equity, and the celebration of diverse identities within our communities’ cultural fabric.”
Once in the Heartbeats Program, Black and Indigenous high school students can serve as junior program facilitators, building leadership, administrative, and teamwork skills while developing independent and collaborative performing arts projects—including the planning and delivery of a free open mic night for National Youth Week.
The Heartbeats post-secondary internship combines an artist residency with program facilitation and administrative support, offering interns space, resources, and mentorship to develop and present original work. In addition, all Heartbeats participants have access to the Opportunity Fund—a financial resource that supports their artistic development and access to professional opportunities.
