Excellence in Academics: Algoma University Business Students Excel in Experiential HR Case Competition

A team of business students from Algoma University’s Sault Ste. Marie campus successfully participated in the 2025 Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario (HRPA) Student Case Competition, a multi-day, immersive learning opportunity designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.

Coached and mentored virtually by Brampton-based Human Resources (HR) professional and Algoma University Professor Anto Mathew, the team included a diverse mix of undergraduate and certificate students from the Faculty of Business and Economics with a focus on HR. Algoma University students Jordan Tomasone, Nainika Babbar, Shivani Patel, Shahid Iqba, and Alina joined their peers in high-pressure case study simulations that challenged them to apply their knowledge of HR strategy, policy, and problem-solving in a competitive, time-sensitive environment.

“As the world of work continues to evolve, skilled HR professionals are in high demand,” shared Professor Mathew. “This competition showcased that our students not only understand HR theories and practices, but can also apply them effectively in a competitive, real-world context. The fact that our team came fourteenth out of twenty-five is impressive. Their ability to perform at a provincial level is a testament to their dedication and potential as well as the competitiveness of our HR program.”

This experiential learning opportunity gave Algoma University students valuable insight into the realities of today’s HR landscape, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge in a dynamic, career-focused setting.

Algoma University is committed to integrating applied, hands-on learning across all academic programs, equipping students to lead, innovate, and adapt in a rapidly evolving workforce.
