Interdisciplinary opportunity offers hands-on insight for Algoma U duo to explore the evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and urban design
A Computer Science student and professor from Algoma University recently traveled to Amsterdam, Netherlands, to take part in AI in the City — an immersive program exploring real-world applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in urban settings, with a focus on smart mobility, urban planning, and civic technology.
Upper-year student Harmeet Sehra and Professor Mahreen Nasir took part in a full week of innovative programming, including site visits, lectures and interactive sessions that showcased how AI is transforming city life. Distinguished lecturers from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany provided keynote speeches, connecting classroom theory with practical applications for future career building and initiatives across the globe.
“From smart streets to smarter minds, Amsterdam was our living lab where AI met the city, and students became urban innovators in just one unforgettable week”, said Mahreen Nasir, Assistant Professor, Computer Science and Technology.
“The connections that I made during my exchange were one of the most memorable parts of the study abroad experience,” shared Harmeet. “This global experience has given me a better understanding of computer science and artificial intelligence concepts from different countries, which helped me gain a thorough foundation of how AI and other generated models play a big role in my professional world. As AI is getting integrated at a very fast pace in the tech world, keeping up with it gets very difficult without this base knowledge.”
AI in City, hosted by the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, showcased the innovative capabilities and future applications of Artificial Intelligence. Students received intensive training in deep learning and data exploration, collaborated with international teams, and participated in social activities. The program included lectures, hands-on labs, and guest speakers, featuring team-building exercises, AI challenges, and discussions centered on futuristic trends.
