Minister Nolan Quinn Visits Algoma University’s Sault Ste. Marie Campus

Minister Meets with Interim President Dr. Sheila Embleton and Tours Cutting-Edge Research Labs

Algoma University welcomed the Honourable Nolan Quinn, Ontario’s Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, to its Sault Ste. Marie campus this week to meet with the newly appointed Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sheila Embleton, and tour Algoma U’s innovative research facilities.

The visit featured guided tours of two of the University’s cutting-edge research facilities: the lab of Dr. William (Bill) Dew, Associate Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Biology, and the lab of Dr. Isabel Molina, Professor in the Department of Biology and Canada Research Chair (Tier II). Dr. Dew presented his research on olfactory physiology, behaviour, and ecotoxicology in marine life, while Dr. Molina shared insights into her work on the biochemistry behind the protective lipids produced by plants.

“Ontario is proudly home to brilliant researchers whose ground-breaking discoveries drive our economy forward,” said Minister Quinn. “It was a pleasure to visit Algoma University to connect with Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sheila Embleton and tour their cutting-edge research facilities that are advancing our critical sectors and improving the lives of people across the province.”

Discussions were also had about Algoma University’s growing role in Ontario’s postsecondary landscape, the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability, as well as its expanding research footprint for both undergraduate and graduate students.

“We are grateful to Minister Quinn for taking the time to visit our Sault Ste. Marie campus and engage with the important work being done by our faculty that is driving important scientific research that  contributes to a strong Ontario economy” said Dr. Embleton. “His support underscores the value of Algoma U’s research excellence in addressing regional, provincial, and global challenges.”
