Our elders have told us when the Creator told the crane to choose a homeland, the crane flew around and settled at Bawahting where there was an abundance of fish. The Art Gallery of Algoma, founded as a non-profit public art gallery, was incorporated in 1975. The gallery is a community organization whose Mission is celebrating culture, educating visitors, and enriching lives through visual arts. Key museological activities include all aspects of collections management from acquisition, documentation, preservation, conservation, storage and exhibition. The AGA hosts adults, students from two school boards (Algoma District School Board and Huron Superior Catholic School Board), seniors, families, Indigenous communities and artists, multi-cultural communities and artists, local contemporary artists, francophone visitors, bus tour groups from across Canada and the United States, and international tourists from Europe, Asia, and Australia. The AGA’s various exhibitions, special events, and exceptional programming provide this diverse clientele many opportunities to engage and learn in both official languages. In 2020, with the onset of the pandemic, AGA visitor numbers were greatly reduced due to the closure of the gallery and in-person visitation. As a result, the AGA developed digital content to support the health and well-being of clientele by keeping them safely engaged, promoting the importance of arts & culture as a great support for mental health, and showcasing the AGA’s commitment to honour their mandate of promoting art within the community. New programming includes video production, virtual artist talks, virtual school tours and virtual art classes.

To further support AGA’s commitment to the preservation, promotion of Canadian art, and supporting tourism within the region, the AGA is seeking students to fill the following summer positions funded through Canada Summer Jobs: 2 Art Instructors, 2 Registrars and a Tourism Industry Consultant.

Who are we?

We’re a straight-talking financial partner who understands the real trials and financial realities of our members’ lives today. We’re the kind of partner who would rather use our profits to fuel local growth than let them leave the communities we belong to. We’re the kind of ally that kicks ‘cookie cutter’ solutions to the curb to lay out personalized solutions that actually meet your needs. We’re all about being a good neighbour.

We grew from serving Algoma Steelworkers and their families as the Algoma Steel Workers’ Credit Union in 1948; to serving the entire Algoma district as ASCU Community Credit Union in 1981; to serving the Province of Ontario as Community First Credit Union in 2005; to merging with Timmins Regional Credit Union serving the Province of Ontario as Community First Credit Union Limited in 2006.

In 2016, we grew again when we merged with Your Neighbourhood Credit Union, and welcomed even more members to our neighbourhood (which now includes Southern Ontario!). As a division of Your Neighbourhood Credit Union Limited, we can offer members the same great credit union with local decision making and great staff, but with even better products and services. If that sounds like an awesome deal for everyone, that’s because it is.
