(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – February 27, 2017): Algoma University, the Anishinaabe Initiatives Division (AID), the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association (SASA), and the Algoma U Alumni Council, invite you to attend the Anishinaabe Alumni Panel, happening on Friday, March 3 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm in the Shingwauk Auditorium.
Featured panelists include John-Paul Calykoff, Tahnee Caraballo, Kerry Perrault, Deborah Pine, Taylor Sayors, and Natalie Shawana-Waboose. These alumni will be detailing their educational journeys from Algoma U through to their respective graduate programs as well as their current career paths. They will also discuss the current challenges facing Anishinaabe peoples in the post-secondary sector while encouraging more youth to actively participate in university education.
John-Paul Calykoff of Michipicoten First Nation earned his Bachelor of Arts in Anishinaabemowin from Algoma U in 2011. He completed his Bachelor of Education (BEd) from Lakehead University in 2012 and is currently completing his Master of Education (MEd) from the same institution. He is an Ojibwe Language Teacher with the Algoma District School Board in Wawa, Ontario.
Kerry Perrault of Garden River First Nation earned her Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biology from Algoma U in 2013. She attended Laurentian University for her Master of Science (MSc) in Biology in 2016. She is currently the Insect Production Research Assistant at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Also from Garden River First Nation, Deborah Pine earned her Bachelor of Arts in Community Economic and Social Development (CESD) from Algoma U in 2013. She earned her Master of Arts (MA) in Geography and Planning from the University of Toronto in 2016. She is currently a Research Project Worker with Nogdawindamin Child and Family Services in Sault Ste. Marie.
From Garden River First Nation, Tahnee Caraballo graduated from Algoma U’s Bachelor of Arts in Law and Justice program in 2015. She is currently enrolled at Lakehead University’s Bora Laskin’s Faculty of Law program.
Taylor Sayers, from Garden River First Nation, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Algoma U in 2008. She is currently working toward completing her Master of Business (MBA) in Community Economic Development from Cape Breton University. Sayers is the Director of Corporate Services with the UCCM Anishinaabe Police Service in M’Chigeeng, Ontario.
From Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, Natalie Shawana-Waboose earned a BBA degree from Algoma U in 2009, followed by her Bachelor of Arts in CESD in 2014. She is currently completing her MBA in Community Economic Development from Cape Breton University. She is currently the Loans and Contribution Assistant with Waubetek Business Development Corporation in Birch Island, Ontario.
