Gather with Our Elders on November 5th

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – November 1, 2016): Algoma University and the Anishinaabe Initiatives Division (AID) will be hosting the 21st Annual Gathering with our Elders on Saturday, November 5th from 7:00am – 6:00pm on campus.

Since 1995, the University has been welcoming Elders to campus to share their knowledge and wisdom in the Elders’ Gathering. The gathering provides an opportunity to share indigenous knowledge through a series of workshops, presentations, and ceremonial practices. The event is a cross-cultural learning experience which also strengthens the cultural identity of Anishinaabe students and allows the surrounding community to learn the stories and perspectives carried by Elders.

The event will begin with a sunrise ceremony with Mike Hodgson at 7:00am at the ceremonial arbour. The sunrise ceremony will be followed by a series of presentations by guest speakers Kevin Nadjiwon, Barbara Nolan, Chief Reg Niganobe, Quinn Meawasige, and Leo Binda, among others. Crafters and vendors will also be on hand, selling traditional handmade items.

For more information, please contact Judy Syrette, Director of Anishinaabe Student Success at [email protected] or call 705.949.2301, Ext. 4335.

This event is open to the public and free to attend. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided for all participants. Daycare will also be available from 9:00am – 4:00pm.
