AUAP Skills Assessment

The AUAP Skills Assessment in English and/or Math is not mandatory for any AUAP student.

All AUAP students will be automatically placed in the AUAP courses when they accept the offer. The assessment is only required for those who wish to be waived the mandatory ENGL and/or MATH courses during the AUAP study period. These students will be required to take the assessment to demonstrate proficiency in Academic Writing in English and/or MATH in order to be withdrawn from these courses accordingly.

The Skills Assessment is not graded as pass or fail and will not affect your admission status as you have already been accepted to AUAP. The purpose of this assessment is simply for you to demonstrate your proficiency in Math and/or English writing if you wish to be waived the English and/or MATH courses prescribed for AUAP.  

You can take the Skills Assessment after you have accepted your offer into the Algoma University Access Program (AUAP). You are strongly encouraged to make arrangements immediately upon acceptance of the offer if you wish to take the test. You will receive a letter or an email with the assessment information from the Registrar’s Office.

We recommend that you complete the test by July 25 in order to complete your registration by the start of the program in September. If you have not completed your assessment by July 25, you will be automatically placed in the most Math and/or English courses. 

All assessments are currently conducted online until further notice. 

Tip: Leave yourself some time to review and prepare for the assessment as the results are important to your registration process.

The assessment charges are shown below: 

Test $25 CAD + Remote proctor $35 CAD 

Total: $60 CAD 

There are multiple ways to make the payment. Please see the Payment and Important Dates for more information. We recommend credit card payment via your Student Portal. 

  • Stable internet connection
  • Private and quiet space, no distractions and noise.  A bedroom or private room is suitable as long as there is nobody else present.
  • Computer laptop or desktop computer (iPads, cell phones, tablets are NOT permitted).
  • A webcam (built-in or portable) 
  • Separate mouse (strongly recommended)
  • Photo Identification (acceptable forms are: Passport, Driver’s License, College ID, OHIP Card, Canadian Identity Card, Canadian Citizenship Card, Permanent Resident Card, Certificate of Indian Status Card)

You might receive your results on the day that you take the assessment. Once you complete your assessment, your scores will be submitted to the university’s Registrar Office. The Registrar’s Office will review your results and they will notify you. 

There are two components of the English assessment: 

  1. Reading (The ACCUPLACER Next Generation Reading Comprehension Test) and 
  2. Writing (ACCUPLACER WritePlacer)

 

The ACCUPLACER Next Generation Reading Comprehension Test

It includes four types of questions:

  • Information and Ideas questions focus on determining central ideas and themes of a passage, summary of a passage, and understanding relationships between ideas presented. 
  • Rhetoric questions focus on analyzing a passage for the author’s word choice, text structure, point of view, purpose and arguments used.  
  • Synthesis questions focus on relating the information and ideas from different texts. 
  • Vocabulary questions focus on finding the meaning of words and phrases used in contexts. 

Assessment format: 

  • 20 questions, multiple choice
  • Computer – adaptive: The test software will select questions based on your previous answers. Answer all the questions to the best of your ability
  • Do not skip any questions and you cannot go back.
  • No time limit (on average, students take 30 – 60 minutes)
  • Use of a dictionary is not allowed

 

The ACCUPLACER WritePlacer Test
  • In your ACCUPLACER WritePlacer assessment, you’ll be provided with a short passage and you’ll be asked to respond to it by writing a multi-paragraph essay to develop a point of view and support it with arguments and examples. 
  • You will have 60 minutes to plan and write the essay. 
  • Your essay must be 300-600 words.   
  • Use of dictionary is not allowed 
  • The ACCUPLACER Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) test assesses the following knowledge and skills:
    • Rational numbers
    • Ratio and Proportional Relationships
    • Exponents
    • Algebraic Expressions
    • Linear Equations
    • Linear Applications and Graphs
    • Probability Sets
    • Descriptive Statistics
    • Geometry Concepts
  • 20 questions, multiple choice
  • Computer – adaptive: The test software will select questions based on your previous answers. Answer all the questions to the best of your ability
  • Do not skip any questions and you cannot go back.
  • No time limit (on average, students take 30 – 60 minutes)
  • Partial Calculator Use: Some questions provide access to a calculator; the calculator appears as part of the question. Other questions will not allow access to a calculator.
