Thais Matte’s (BBA Human Resources ‘22) journey to Algoma University began with a basketball scholarship that brought her from Brazil to Canada. From the moment she began the recruitment process, Thais felt a deep connection with the university. “When the coach and the university staff contacted me to start my recruitment process, they were so nice and they cared so much for me, that I knew it was the right place for me!” she recalls.
During her time at Algoma, Thais fully embraced the student-athlete experience. She was a key player on the women’s varsity basketball team and served as a Resident Assistant (RA) for three years, contributing to campus life and supporting her peers. She also worked as a student assistant at the George Leach Centre, adding another layer to her busy university life. In her final year, she briefly joined the Algoma University Business Society (AUBS), further expanding her network and experiences.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Thais emphasizes the value of her education at Algoma University. “With the Bachelor of Business Administration program at Algoma U, I was able to have a great overview of how successful businesses work. I was able to experience ‘real-life business’ situations, with the Northern Ontario Business Case Competition (NOBCC), in my last semester of the BBA. Algoma prepared me by providing a wide range of experiences that simulate real-life work situations, and it gave me the opportunity to create a great network.”
Today, Thais is a Senior Accounting Analyst at Tenaris, where she is responsible for payroll across all Tenaris entities in Canada. Her role includes analyzing costs and price variations, managing order settlements, and handling financial provisions and account clearings. The practical skills and experiences she gained at Algoma have been instrumental in her career.
“My time at Algoma University was amazing,” Thais shares. “From basketball to my studies and work at the gym, I was able to meet incredible people who I will take with me for the rest of my life! I always felt like Algoma was my home away from home, and even though I graduated a few years ago, I still feel part of this amazing institution! Thank you, AU.”
