The relationship between cultural attachment and mental wellbeing among Canada’s Indigenous population is examined to inform policy makers about potential solutions to address the gap in the mental health status between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations. Data from the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey is analysed using multiple models to determine the factors associated with psychological wellbeing. Cultural attachment is assessed by involvement in traditional activities and Indigenous language. The results suggest an urban-rural divide with cultural attachment playing a role for Indigenous Canadians living in rural areas. The results are expected to be of interest to policy makers in countries with significant Indigenous populations who tend to have higher frequencies of psychological wellbeing issues, such as Canada, Australia, and the United States.

Dr. Belayet Hossain is a full professor of Economics at Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, BC. He earned his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University, USA. Dr. Hossain has more than 35 years of teaching and research experience. His areas of research include Issues in Development Economics, Non-Profit Sector, and Issues in Aboriginal Economics. As an active researcher, Dr. Hossain has been presenting his research works in numerous conferences around the world and publishing in a variety of peer-reviewed journals including Applied Economics, Voluntary and Non-Profit Sector Quarterly journals.
