SRSC Hosts NOSM

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – June 22, 2016): Today, the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC), located on the campus of Algoma University, will host the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). Over 100 delegates will be on campus to learn about the history of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School as part of NOSM’s 2016 Indigenous Research and Gathering.

The Indigenous Research Gathering works to review past and current research practices and build inclusive and culturally respectful research programs that impact the health of Indigenous communities.

The group will participate in a historic tour of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School site. A dinner and discussion will be held with University President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Craig Chamberlin, Chancellor and Survivor Shirley Horn, as well as local First Nations chiefs.

“We are pleased to host the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and their colleagues from around the world, on campus,” said President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Craig Chamberlin. “This is a great opportunity to educate the people of Northern Ontario and from other countries, about the residential schools era and the history of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School. It is our responsibility to continue the vision and legacy of sharing, healing, and learning on campus.”
