Algoma U further elevates its accounting specialization
(SAULT STE. MARIE, BRAMPTON ONTARIO, Apr. 2, 2024): Algoma University and the Registered Professional Accountant of Canada (RPA Canada) have signed an agreement that gives Algoma University students pursuing an accounting specialization access to another impressive option for professional designations.
A memorandum of understanding was signed Tuesday by Algoma University President and Vice-Chancellor Asima Vezina, and President and CEO of RPA Canada Zubair Choudhry. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Sheref Sabawy, Mississauga-Erin Mills MPP, including other distinguished guests.
With the signing of this agreement, Algoma U accounting students will now be on track to qualify for both the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA) and the RPA designations, further expanding their career pathways. Algoma University’s accounting courses are all CPA recognized, meaning all Algoma Accounting graduates are qualified and prepared to take the Professional Education Program and exam for their CPA designation. Now, Algoma University accounting students will also be on track to write the RPA exam.
The RPA designation focuses on preparing professional accountants for small-and medium-sized enterprises (SME), like small businesses and non-profit organizations.
“Algoma University is offering our accounting students choice, and the flexibility to excel in their chosen field,” said Vezina. “This memorandum of understanding signifies our dedication to providing our graduates with world-class skills and qualifications needed to thrive in today’s dynamic job market. Together, we are shaping a future where Algoma University students can reach new heights and make a lasting impact.”
“This alliance paves the way for collaborative efforts, knowledge sharing, and innovation, to raise standards and foster excellence in accounting, finance, and management.” said Zubair Choudhry, President & CEO of RPA Canada.
“By harnessing the combined expertise of RPA Canada, a leading accounting body, and the academic competence of Algoma University, renowned for nurturing future leaders, we are poised to reshape the field of accounting education and propel aspiring professionals toward success. Our joint mission is to enhance ethical standards and harness innovative technologies to better cater to the requirements of the SME sector. Furthermore, this memorandum of understanding opens doors for Algoma University’s accounting graduates to secure better job opportunities and recognition through the prestigious RPA designation. Simultaneously, it serves SMEs by providing access to educated accountants, allowing them to leverage professional expertise for their businesses’ benefit.” added Mr. Choudhry.
“With the signing of this agreement, Algoma U accounting graduates will be fully equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to take the Mandatory Professional Exams (MPE) and obtain their RPA designation,” said Dr. William Wei, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics at Algoma University. “In addition, we are starting the recruitment process for three PhDs in accounting to join our faculty this year.”
Algoma University offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a specialization in Accounting on both its Brampton and Sault Ste. Marie campuses. A three-year Accounting Program is also offered at the university’s Sault Ste. Marie campus.
