(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – October 12, 2018): Algoma University’s updated enrolment projections for the 2018-2019 school year point to an anticipated increase of 11 per cent above initial forecasts and an 8.7 per cent increase over 2017-2018 enrolments.
In April of 2018, the University forecasted an enrolment decline of 2.7 per cent, based largely on the impact of a large graduating class and fewer secondary school students in Northeastern Ontario. The enrolment decline was expected to continue for two more years before rebounding.
“The increase in enrolment can be attributed to three main strategies: local recruitment initiatives; new and emerging international markets; and increased interest in the School of Business and Economics,” said University President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina. “This was a shared effort amongst our entire University community. We are developing further strategies to maintain this positive enrolment growth.”
“Our marketing and recruiting strategies are proving to be effective and have contributed to the University’s enrolment growth. Our incoming domestic and international first year cohorts grew this fall. It’s nice to see our recruitment team’s hard work paying off with an enrolment increase,” said Brent Krmpotich, Director of Enrolment Management and International Operations. “The number of Ontario secondary school students choosing the University grew by 30 per cent this year – the highest percentage increase in the province. The growth was driven by an increase in the number of local students as well as students from the Greater Toronto Area.”
The University’s Brampton campus, offering programming through the recently launched School of Business and Economics, is experiencing record growth, with enrolment doubling from last year. “This is an exciting time for us,” said Cathy Denomme, Director of the School of Business and Economics. “We have experienced a tremendous response to our programming in Brampton. Enrolment is healthy and the large intake has created a buzz on campus.”
Renovations and new spaces are in the horizon for both campuses.
The University kicked off the 2018-2019 student recruitment campaign at the Ontario Universities Fair (OUF) in Toronto, Ontario at the end of September. OUF is the largest post-secondary recruitment fair in North America. Algoma saw a dramatic increase in the number of leads generated, evidence that more people are interested in pursuing an Algoma education and the unique northern experience that accompanies it.
“The number of new prospective student contacts at the OUF increased from 870 last year to over 1,500 this year,” said Krmpotich.
Representatives from Algoma as well as those from the 20 other Ontario universities will be in Sault Ste. Marie for the University Information Program on Monday, October 15 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at École Notre-Dame-du-Sault.
Over the next three months, admission advisors will be meeting with thousands of prospective students across the country and around the world, encouraging them to study at Algoma.
